Here’s a quick look at what happened at the Larned City Council meeting Monday night:
• Officer Colby Hill’s recent graduation from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center was recognized by council members.
• A request to allow RV, boat and trailer parking at the Prairie Vista community was approved. Residents will be allowed to park up to two additional vehicles in the overflow parking west of the community, provided they adhere to the conditions set forth.
• Information concerning public financing options for a possible city pool project was presented by representatives from Piper Jaffray.
• A presentation was made by Karen VanVleet concerning ongoing updates to the city’s GIS system.
• Approved the purchase of a technology security system and upgrades from OPI of Great Bend.
• Approved a township request to store equipment on city-owned property as a permitted use, rather than as a conditional use.
LARNED — When the Larned City Council met Monday night, their first order of business was the commendation of Larned Police Department’s newest addition, Officer Colby Hill, who completed his police academy training June 1.
Larned Police Chief Charles Orth introduced Hill to the council.
“After 14 weeks Hill has successfully graduated and is now a fully commissioned police officer and I think he’s got a nice future here,” he said. “I appreciate the opportunity to have hired him and I expect good things out of him.”
Mayor William Nusser congratulated Hill.
“We’re glad to be able to invest in you and you are sure to be a great contribution to the department,” he said. Then, turning his gaze to ... and other officers present, he added, “Thank you all for what all you do for our citizens.”
Hill was originally hired as a communications officer in January, but when Officer Dusty Snodgrass tendered his resignation for a position with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Hill requested and was granted a transfer. He began training at the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center in February.
RV parking okayed
At the Larned City Council meeting in July, Dale Meadows, resident of Prairie Vista Duplexes, asked to store his RV in the parking lot and a car. The request was an agenda item Monday night.
Council members had few qualms, so discussion focused on guidelines. A parking lot at the west end of the development currently has about 12 spots available. In order to ensure only vehicles belonging to residents of Prairie Vista would be parked there, the council agreed proof of ownership would be required.
In addition, the vehicles would need to be properly registered and insured, and proof would also be required. It was also determined that other trailered vehicles, such as boats or even empty trailers could be allowed. Some residents may have more than one, it was noted, so it was also agreed up to two per residence could be allowed.
The council briefly discussed whether an additional charge would be required, but ultimately they decided against it.
“The city ordinance allows parking of recreational vehicles provided they are tagged and insured, and in operable condition,” Larned Building Inspector F. Smith said. “All our ordinances read that you can’t do maintenance on a vehicle in the street or parking. You’re supposed be in a garage to do that.”
Residents would also need to agree to allow the city to waive liability for the vehicle, it was agreed.
Council members approved the request effective immediately.
