An error in the calculation of certain 2023 tax levies in a small portion of northern Barton County occurred when the value of a late-filing utility company was not included in the calculation of those levies, Barton County Clerk Bev Schmeidler said. This only affected a small number of taxpayers who may have overpaid by just a few dollars, and no cities and the county as a whole were not impacted. 

“The limitations of the software prevent our ability to recalculate those levies,” she said. “Steps are being taken to insure it does not happen in the future.”

Taxpayers in the area are eligible for a refund, but there is a process involved.
