USD 112 has short meeting Monday
board prepares for upcoming school year.
USD 112 Central Plains

Monday’s weather truncated several items on the Central Plains USD 112 meeting agenda, but the board was able to take care of business as snow begin to fall that evening.

Anticipating the snowstorm, the board prepared for some electronic communication for members unable to attend, noted USD 112 Superintendent Bill Lowry.

“We had a member from Wilson who wouldn’t be able to make it in and I never made it out of Norton County yesterday,” said Lowry, who resides in Almena, about 150 miles north of Claflin. “We did have five members attending the meeting in person. The ones out of town drive great big four-wheel drive pickups.”

The Monday session began with a special meeting to hold an executive session to discuss candidate responses to the district’s ongoing superintendent search. Lowry’s tenure as superintendent ends at the close of the 2023-24 school year.

The regular session began with reorganization, that included installation of members, election of board officers and setting the dates and times for the upcoming school year.

Superintendent Lowry noted that the reorganization resolution was patterned after last year’s document, but changing the location for the meeting from the USD 112 District Office in Claflin to Central Plains High School due to availability and capacity concerns.

District 3 board member Tamara Dody was re-elected as board president, while District 5 board member Joshua Hurley was re-elected vice president.

Short agenda

Other items considered were various regular meeting reports and approval of a patron donation for football equipment, Lowry said.

A current vacancy on the board was not discussed at the meeting, but Lowry noted the district is still in the process of accepting eligible applications from the board’s Position 2 location.

“We are still advertising for our vacant Position 2 seat,” Lowry said. “We are waiting on applications. I would assume that action will be taken with that filled at our next monthly meeting or a special meeting if we have enough applications.”

Regarding the superintendent search, a special meeting concerning candidate interviews was set for this evening, Jan. 11, Lowry noted.
