CLAFLIN — The 94 Store Cafe in Claflin, 200 E. Front St., reopened about a month ago and is serving fresh ground hamburgers from Bailey’s, fresh cut French fries and hash browns, and breakfast all day. They are open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday except holidays. The gas station portion closes at 4 p.m.
“It’s family owned and operated,” said Manager Christopher Cates. His wife Jennifer waits tables and keeps the books, with assistance from their grandparents, Don and Ginger Cates.
Their specialty meal is the hamburger steak with sauteed onions, baked potato and Texas toast. They will also have a smaller portion for Golden Age customers, including smaller hamburgers and fries.
Christopher is pleased with the fresh ground beef. “It’s a little more juicy and has better flavor. It’s nice to be able to have more control,” over sizing.
“I just enjoy cooking,” he said, although sometimes it is a challenge.
The cafe has begun publishing a daily special menu for the month two weeks in advance.
They also serve chef salad and fish on Fridays during Lent.
The 94 Store had been closed about nine months. Christopher had been working in Ellsworth, but wanted to be closer to home to see his daughter more. It was at that point that the family decide to reopen the cafe.
The number to call ahead for to go orders is 620-587-9494.
