Claflin City Council meets

CLAFLIN — The governing body of Claflin met in regular session on Sept. 13.

By council consensus the city will purchase a new pole-saw.

Murine Prosser and Lois and Pete Krier are trying to put together an all school class reunion. The last one was held in 1987. They wanted to see if the city would be open to a street dance, beer garden etc. The council encouraged them to continue with their plans.

The new police pickup has been ordered.

By council consensus, the meter at the fire station will be replaced at a cost of about $680.

Michaelis moved, Schneweis seconded with all in favor, authorizing Mayor Nelson to sign a 3-year contract with Kaiser Trash Service, which included a 7% increase for trash service. Resident price increase effective Oct. 1, 2010. The business rates will be discussed at the October meeting.

Suelter will get some information to Prosser about starting up a Chamber of Commerce.

By council consensus the Lions Club president may have a key to the Community Center.

Schneweis moved to adopt ordinance #10-0913B, which adopts the "standard traffic ordinance for Kansas cities for 2010 and Ordinance #10-0913A, which adopts the "uniform public offense code for 2010. Bailey seconded with all in favor.

Verizon Wireless is considering a new cell site east of Claflin. The site will probably not be in the city’s 1-mile zone.

The city will take sealed bids for the police pickup beginning Oct. 1. All bids will have to be in before the November 12th council meeting. The city reserves the right to reject any and all bids. We will not settle if reserve is not met.

Oberle moved to go into executive session for 10 minutes to consult with the city attorney on matters that would be deemed privileged in the attorney client relationship.
