CLAFLIN — The Claflin Fitness Center, which was established by volunteers in 2013, has added classes and is making plans for further improvements to the facility.
Depending upon the exact needs, plans are to fix up a couple of restrooms located off of the weight/cardio room. The board of directors is planning a walk-through to assess the needs.
In addition, they are planning to fix up some adjoining rooms for aerobics and yoga  classes.
“I can’t imagine things being any better,” said Kelly Nixon, board member. “We’re extremely pleased with the turn out.”
“I’m keeping busy,” said Jessica Habiger, recreation director, who works part time. They are considering adding Zumba classes and Boot Camp when the weather warms up.
Instructor Dee Krier has been offering yoga and tai chi classes, which Habiger said have been going extremely well. The yoga classes are offered at various times throughout the week. About thirty have been participating, Habiger said.
The Fitness Center is in the old Claflin Elementary School building. An adjoining community center, which has a large complete kitchen and meeting rooms, has also provided an area for community activities. The Community Center section has been completed for some time, and is used for many events including senior coffees. It is also available for rent.
Central Plains High School-Claflin held its prom and after-prom party in the Center.
The Claflin Recreation Commission began this project about two years ago, building an exercise area with state-of-the-art equipment, including treadmills, free weights and weight machines.
The phone number for the rec is 620-588-4321. The rec office hours are MWF from 7:30-11:30 a.m.
