CLAFLIN — Claflin’s quilting group, Twisted Stitchers, recently met for work sessions to make 95 receiving blankets for Barton County Health Department nurses to distribute at home visits along with vital Sudden Infant Death Syndrome prevention education. Nurses stress that babies should be swaddled correctly and always be placed on their backs and facing up to help prevent SIDS.
Members of the club read about the grant that the health department had received from Golden Belt Community Foundation to purchase fabric for the receiving blankets and decided that their club wanted to help. A member of the club wrote and secured a $200 grant from Midwest Energy that they judiciously combined with a fabric sale and coupons at an area retailer to purchase enough fabric to complete 95 receiving blankets.
They worked together to prepare and cut the fabric and then each person took material home to sew. Club member Pam Atteberry said "they are a wonderfully caring group of gals who have hearts for helping. Best of all, many babies will be swaddled in soft receiving blankets made lovingly by the Twisted Stitchers Quilt Group."
