ELLINWOOD —The Ellinwood Middle School team rebounded from two road losses when they played at home on Tuesday Sept. 27 against the Dodge City Sacred Heart Cougars.
The team started out extremely fast taking an early 20-0 lead in the first quarter. Kaleb Schartz led the scoring and had the majority of the carries and yards in the first quarter to give the Eagles the early lead.
In the second quarter, the Cougars started to excecute thier short passing game and were able to score their first touchdown, while the Eagles added one more touchdown. The halftime score was 28-6. Immediately after halftime the Cougars drove the ball down field and scored again, making it a 28-12 game. With momentum shifting towards the Cougars, the Eagles responded, facing a critical 4th and 12 play, Connor Ewing hit Jordan Mountain on a fade route which Jordan took to the endzone to give the Eagles a 34-12 lead. The defense then made some big plays and their emotion took over to get the ball right back for the offense.
In the 4th quarter, the Eagles restablished their run game and held onto the ball for most of the quarter eventually scoring one more time and running the clock out with an offensive possession. The final score was 40-12, the Eagles are now 2-2. on the year.
They will face Canton-Galva on Thursday at home, and then play at Hoisington on Oct. 6 and finish their season at home against Plainville on Oct. 13.
