ELLINWOOD — The new Ellinwood Recreation Commission has begun meeting and making plans for the creation of a separate department for the community.
At its first meeting on May 28, board members chose officers. Mel Waite is chairperson and Amanda Proffitt is secretary/treasurer. Greg Maxwell was chosen as the at large and fifth member of the commission.
At the June 19 meeting, the board voted to rent two rooms in the basement of Sunflower Bank at a cost of $150 per month with the understanding that the rooms would not be occupied until first of the year. The address will be 13 N. Main, Lower Level.
The rooms already have office furniture. A deposit of one month’s rent will be required.
The board approved renting a post office box, giving the commission an address. Federal and State ID numbers could then we applied for.
City Administrator Bob Peter and current recreation director Nancy Baird were present at the meeting. It was agreed by the board to take over the responsibility for recreation after volleyball and basketball seasons were over.
