The 10 p.m. Thanksgiving sale at Great Bend’s Walmart got out of hand, with people being “knocked down and trampled,” according to police reports. No one was sent to the hospital, but a woman did complain that her arm hurt after the scuffle, according to Sgt. James Buchar at the Great Bend Police Department.
Police were on hand during the special sales at 8 and 10 p.m. Thursday and 5 a.m. Friday. Before the 10 p.m. sale, a group of people surrounded the display, waiting for the clerk to cut the wrapping over the items. As soon as that happened, the crowd surged forward. “Some people got knocked down and trampled,” Buchar said.
A juvenile who was with his mother in the store was carrying a bat that they were purchasing, and when the shoving began, “the bat hit a couple of people,” the sergeant said. “There was no evidence that he swung the bat at anyone. He just got bumped around in the crowd.”
Buchar did not know the age of the boy, but said he might have been a teenager. He did not say what items people were fighting over, but a number of electronic items went on sale at 10 p.m.
No arrests were made.
