A group of Great Bend businesses are joining forces to honor the veterans of America’s armed forces by hold a Veteran’s Recognition Day on Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Westgate Shopping Center.
The event runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot and shops at 1649 W. K-96.
“We owe a lot to our veterans and active duty servicemen and women,” said Bryan Harris of Waters True Value Hardware, one of the sponsors. “This event is our way of saying thank you. Through their sacrifices we live in a country where we have the freedom to hold such an event.”
Along with the World War II 4th Armored Division re-enactors and the American Legion Riders, other outdoor displays will include the Kansas National Guard ETAB 161st FA, KSNG 731st Transportation Co. and the Army Reserve 863rd Quarter Master Detachment. Recruiters participating will be the KSNG with a climbing wall and jousting pit, Army with their recruiting hummer and more.
“We hope to have a very special surprise for everyone.” Harris said. There is also what is being billed as an “inspirational program” at 12:30 p.m.
There is also some special news, Harris said. “We are proud to announce this event is officially registered with the Wounded Warrior Project, and money raised from food concessions will be donated to this special organization.”
There will also be collection sites for items needed for the Great Bend Military Moms. These items will be boxed and sent to our troops over seas. Lists of items needed and drop off locations are at Gambino’s Pizza, P&S Security and Waters.
In addition, the Barton County Cemetery Board will have a booth. The group is raising funds to construct a veterans memorial at Golden Belt Memorial Park north of Great Bend.
“I want to thank everyone who has helped plan and are participating in this event,” Harris said. Sponsors include Gambino’s Pizza of Great Bend, P&S Security and Waters. Also participated are Encore Sound and Parr Sound and Lighting.
