City staff prepares for busy summer season

Getting ready for its warm weather busy season is requiring a great deal of extra effort for city crews, according to a report City Administrator Howard Partington prepared for the Great Bend City Council this week.
Partington explained work is continuing on projects to get ready for the busy recreation season that is rapidly approaching.
He reported that construction at the Great Bend Sports Complex over the past month has included:
• Installation of the metal roofing and the placement of the concrete slabs beneath the picnic porticos.
• Completion of the erection of the steel framing components for the bleacher canopies behind the backstops at all four fields — including wood sheathing installation.
• The beginning of the installation of the metal roof on the restroom/concessions building.
• Sheetrock installation, painting and other related construction on the interior.
In another project, the city Water Department staff recently pumped out the swimming pool as work is going on to prepare the spray park for another summer of activities.
“We have started work on the water park in preparation for the upcoming pool season,” he reported.
The Park Department staff have also “assisted the Sunflower Rod and Custom Association Great Bend organization in replacing some of the concrete at the drag strip.”
And some events are already beginning, the city administrator noted. “This past weekend, we assisted with the Hap Dumont baseball tournament, Relay for Life fund raiser at Jack Kilby square, MoPar car show and drag races,” he reported.
