Dogs walk owners to help humane society

The first-ever Get off you Butt and Walk your Mutt is set for 1-4 p.m. Saturday at the Barton County Courthouse Square. Early registrations are encouraged to guarantee a T-shirt, but they will also be taken Saturday starting at noon.
The entry fee for the dog-walking event is $20. All proceeds go to the Golden Belt Humane Society to help homeless animals.
Dogs will walk their humans about three miles. But, participants don’t have to walk the entire distance and they don’t even have to have a dog to take part.
With the help of the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, there will be door prizes, hot chocolate, dog treats, pictures and more.
“We hope to make this a yearly event,” said RaShann Southard, event organizer. “The humane society needs some serious help.”
Southard said she is also going to be putting together an adoption day at Orschlens in the near future and will be posting available dogs on society’s Facebook page. She also wants to hold a dog food drive.
“These are what my hopes are to help bring awareness to how many dogs are actually being euthanized,” she said. “People don’t understand when they drop a pet off. They think they will just be adopted right out. They have no idea the number of dogs that are put down there and I am hoping to decrease this number.”
Registration forms for the walk are available at any area veterinary office, Golden Belt Humane Society, Club 1 Fitness and the City Building on Williams.
