Tuesday night, the Great Bend High School vocal music department performed the Fall Concert at the high school auditorium. Freshman and Sophomore choirs, A Cappellas, Madrigals, and a Male Chorus performed from a wide variety of genres including pop, spiritual, and traditional choir songs. This year marks 20 years that Vocal Director Susan Stambaugh and piano accompanist Nancy Baxter have worked together to develop and showcase the talent of Great Bend’s youth.
“Even more than our years together, this marks 78 years of A Cappella choir,” Stambaugh said. “It is a testament to the years of commitment that vocal music teachers that came before me have put into the program to make it all that it is today.”
An A Capella choir singer surprised Baxter with flowers. But that wasn’t the only surprise. With a short lead in, Stambaugh paused long enough for choir member to ask the much anticipated question, “Brandon, will you go to Holly Ball with me?” to which the young man readily agreed.
In addition to singing talent, audience members were treated to several solo performances from the various choirs, instrumental accompanists from the high school band, as well as accompaniment by band instructors Mark DeWald and Austin Russell, and a violin accompaniment by orchestra instructor Isaac Enochs.
“I am so appreciative of Mr. DeWald and the instrumental department and the assistance of his students with our production.” Stambaugh said.
The fall concert kicks off a full schedule for the GBHS vocal department.
