The investigation into an explosion and fire at Lake Wilson Marina Monday continues, authorities said Wednesday.
According to Russell County Sheriff John Fletcher, the incident involves a 911 call to Russell County Communications Monday afternoon that told of an explosion and fire at the marina. Units responded at 4:39 p.m. from Russell County Sheriff’s Office, Russell County EMS, Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism, Russell City Fire Rescue, Dorrance, Lucas and Sylvan Grove Fire Departments and the Kansas Highway Patrol.
Roberta Favinger, who owns the marina along with her husband Terry, said the fire was located on one boat storage dock and contained to five boat slips. At least two boats were completely destroyed and several others damaged.
No injuries were reported due to the fire or explosion.
In addition to the fire crews, Favinger said her husband and two of his helpers, Howard Harger and Brad Nemnich, battled the blaze. The three eventually had to give in due to the smoke.
Although the cause is undetermined, Favinger said the fire started on one of the boats. The damage could have been minimized had the boat’s owner been able to control the burning.
Firefighters were at the scene for several hours.
The Kansas State Fire Marshal Office has been called in to help with an investigation of the incident by the KDWPT.
Lake Wilson Marina is the only marina at the lake. It is located in Wilson State Park.
