Bridge work kept the Barton Count Road and Bridge Department busy recently it was reported to the County Commission Monday morning.
In his update to the commission, Road and Bridge Director Dale Phillips said crews were called on Saturday, Oct. 5, to a bridge collapse in east central Barton County. Located on Northeast 80 Road between Northeast 150 and 160 avenues, the bridge and road are now barricaded pending repair.
Phillips said the concrete bridge, which was built in the 1940s, was in bad shape and was further damaged after it was covered with water during the August flooding. However, the whole in the driving surface happened after the water had receded.
In related business, efforts are continuing related to flood damages northeast of Ellinwood and other Federal Emergency Management Agency projects have been started.
In addition, Phillips said work was completed on Northeast 30 Road with a half railroad car culvert (which replaced a deteriorating bridge) and asphalt road repairs.
Phillips also noted that:
• Asphalt, overlay and shoulder work was completed at the following locations: Southeast 40 Road near Ellinwood and Northeast 60 Avenue near Great Bend
• Asphalt millings were stockpiled from the Great Bend Airport project.
• Sign repairs were made to damaged stop, curve and bridge signs.
• Winter Snow training for all staff is planned for November 4, 2013.
Phillip’s report was part of County Administrator Richard Boeckman’s bi-weekly update on departmental activities. Other highlights included:
