Barton County will have primaries for three positions in August to determine which candidates’ names will appear on the November ballot.
County Election Officer Donna Zimmerman said all three primaries are for Republican candidates. The date of the election has not bet set; it could be as early as Aug. 7 but may be later due to redistricting issues. “We’re waiting for the judge’s decision,” Zimmerman said, noting senate and representative districts may change. The Legislature draws new district maps every 10 years.
Individuals in county races can still file to have their names on the November ballot as independent candidates, until noon on the day before the primary.
The primary elections will determine the Republican candidates for Barton County Commissioner, third district; Barton County Sheriff and Barton County Treasurer.
Candidates for the third district commission seat being vacated by John Edmonds are Don Davis and Buck Causey, both of Great Bend.
Candidates running for sheriff are Greg Armstrong, Brian J. Bellendir and Richard W. Unrein, all of Great Bend.
Candidates running for treasurer are Kevin Wondra and Gayle Cell, both of Great Bend.
Armstrong and Wondra are incumbents seeking reelection.
Zimmerman noted that Barton County is also in the 20th Judicial District, and there were be a primary for the two Republican candidates seeking the position being vacated by District Judge Hannelore Kitts. Robert Anderson of Ellinwood and Steven Johnson of Great Bend have filed.
