HAYS — A Great Bend teenager driving the wrong way on Interstate 70 was critically injured Friday night when the pickup he was driving hit an oncoming car, killing the other driver. A semitrailer then struck both disabled vehicles, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.
Douglas R. Feldt, 37, of Hays, was pronounced dead at the scene. Cameron Wade Williams, 19, of Great Bend, was flown from the scene, 1.5 miles east of I-70 at Commerce Parkway, Hays, to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. A hospital spokesman said he was in critical condition Saturday.
Williams was driving a Dodge Ram 1500 that was eastbound on I-70 in the westbound lane at 11:49 p.m. when it struck a Kia Soul driven by Feldt, who was westbound. Both vehicles came to rest in the left lane and were struck by a Freightliner driven by Jeremy Lee Kelly, 35, from Marion, Ill., who taken to Hays Medical Center for possible injuries. Kelly was the only one wearing a seat belt.
