It’s been nearly a month since 33-year-old Rhiannon Young died after being hit by a motorist who then drove away on the U.S. 281 Bypass. The Great Bend Police Department continues to investigate, Detective David Bailey said.
Young, 33, of Hoisington, died Oct. 12. Officers were called to the 2200 block of the bypass, the area of the Harm’s Field baseball diamond, that Saturday evening at 8:24 p.m. They found Young on the side of the road suffering from severe head injuries. She was taken to Great Bend Regional Hospital and later flown to a Wichita hospital.
Bailey said Monday that he’s still waiting for the final autopsy report, which could take several weeks, and “another report.” He’s also shared his preliminary findings with Barton County Attorney’s Office.
The night of the accident, it was reported that a white sport utility vehicle was seen leaving the area headed north. Police interviewed the owner of a white Expedition after learning Young had been seen in the vehicle with him. He agreed to allow officers to search the vehicle, Lt. Bill Browne reported two days after Young’s death.
The public’s assistance is still requested in the ongoing investigation. Anyone with any kind of information about what may have gone on in that neighborhood between 7 and 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, may call the Great Bend Police Department, 793-4120, or call Crime Stoppers to leave a tip anonymously. The telephone number for Crime Stoppers is 792-1300, or 888-305-1300 for toll-free calls outside of Great Bend.
