Today, five American Legion Riders from the Great Bend Chapter 180 will depart for Indianapolis, Ind. They will join over 400 fellow riders to complete a 1,500-mile one-way, five-day ride to Houston, gathering donations for the Legacy Scholarship Fund. Riding this year from Great Bend are Bill Titsworth, Jeannie Munsch, Bob Jarmer, Brenda and Chris Krueger, and Larry Buczinski.
They will join 10 other riders from Kansas taking part in the Run.
In all, Buczinski said they will be gone two weeks. Leaving at 6:15 a.m. this morning, it will take them two days to get to Indianapolis and they will leave for Houston on Sunday.
The riders will reach their destination on Thursday and stick around for the American Legion National Convention there. Then, they will take two days to make their way back to Great Bend.
This is the eighth year for the run, which has contributed over $2 million toward the fund’s current standing at $3.3 million.  The Legion’s goal is to reach 20 million dollars, which will be used to provide college scholarships to the children of soldiers who have died while on active duty since 9/11.
“This is a very worthwhile cause,” said Buczinski, who is making the ride for the second time. It can be a challenge for child missing one parent to make it to college and this fund helps.
Kansas has a history of being among the top fund raising states, including leading the nation in donations for two years straight. Donations for the fund can be sent to the Legacy Scholarship Fund, Box 721, Great Bend KS.
