Just in time for baseball and softball season, the Great Bend Recreation Commission plans to improve its presence on Facebook.

GBRC is already on the Internet’s most popular social networking site. However, Executive Director Diann Henderson told her board of directors Monday that staff is working on creating a more active Facebook page. The improvements should be made shortly after Memorial Day, and then people will be able to check the page for game times and notices of cancellations. That should take some of the demand off of the GBRC telephone hotline, and will be more convenient for some people. It’s even possible for notices of updates to go direct to cell phones with e-mail.

Board members also learned that more swim classes for toddlers will be available this summer at The Wetlands at Great Bend Aquatic Facility. Enrollment started Monday. Toddler sessions are available on July 25 and Aug. 5. "A parent or adult needs to be in the water with the child," Henderson said.

The board voted to renew its annual contract with Sunflower Diversified Services. GBRC has three staff members who provide exercise classes, games, crafts and life-skill classes to adults with developmental disabilities.

Henderson reported that for the month of April GBRC had 4,852 people enrolled in activities. There were 5,750 participants, including 1,477 spectators.
