The “Spark a Reaction” teen summer program at the Great Bend Public Library continues this month. The following Teen Spot events are intended for students in grades 7-12.
Teens can make rock candy at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 8.
The fourth and final program in the STEM series will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 10. According to Young Adult Librarian Jennifer King, STEM (science, technology, electronics and mathematics) is sponsored by the Girl Scouts and open to boys and girls. In the final program, “Imagine Saving the Planet,” teens will learn about careers in environmental science and green-minded architecture. They’ll also experiment with cleaning up oil spills and making a fountain.
The Teen Spot is all about looking good at the Nail Art program at 1:11 p.m. on Friday, July 11. “It’s the perfect way to earn points towards prizes and try something fun,” King said. “For any boy who wants to earn points but doesn’t want to walk around with gorgeous nails, don’t worry; nail polish remover will be available.”
Teens can make glow-in-the-dark Galaxy Shirts at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 15. Bring a black, cotton shirt to the library for this project.
Teen Game day will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 12, and Tuesday, July 29. Game day features a variety of games from Super Smash Brothers to board games.
The annual summer lockdown, a glow-in-the-dark party after hours, will be held on Friday, July 18. Teens who wish to participate must submit a signed consent form by 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 15, and must fulfill the minimum point requirement for the Spark a Reaction Teen Summer Library Program to participate. Details can be found at the library or on the library’s website. For more information visit the library website at greatbendpl.info or call 792-2409.
The Teen Spot will have a Building Contest at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 22, and students will make Comic Book Coasters at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 24.
This summer’s most highly anticipated teen event is the Food Fight at 4:13 p.m. on Friday, July 25. King said there are participation requirements. Teens should check in at the library to see if they meet them.
