Teens who can sing, dance and act are invited to hone their crafts this summer by attending “Broadway @ Barton,” a residential summer high school camp at Barton Community College, from June 15-27.
BCC Theater Director Erin Renard said Broadway @ Barton is an intensive, two-week musical theater camp for current high school students. Students will attend morning classes in theatrical costuming and makeup, vocal performance, music theory, dance, improvisation, monologues, auditioning, lighting and set design. Afternoons will consist of dance, vocal and acting rehearsals for the Broadway musical, “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” to be performed on the last day of camp in the college’s newly renovated Fine Arts Auditorium.
Tuition is $700 per student. This will cover all camp fees, classes, meals in the Student Union and housing and three college credit-hours. In addition, a free outing is planned for Camp Aldrich which includes a day of horseback riding, swimming, hiking and games.
A limited amount of need based scholarships are available.
“We have students lined up ... but we are looking for more talent,” Renard said. Participants will receive music and scripts prior to the start of camp, but casting won’t be decided until the first night of camp.
An experienced crew will help students put together a full-scale musical in just two weeks. Renard has over 30 years of experience in theater performance, choreography and direction. She has been seen on television as well as short and feature films.
Musical director Alex Underwood and costume director Tomme Williams will also provide instruction. Underwood is a professional musical director and choir conductor. He performs with Westminster Choir several times a year at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center’s Avery Fischer Hall. His theater experience includes over 30 full-scale productions. Williams is the theater director at Fort Hays State University.
Leon Sobba will serve as the technical director and has decades of experience in stage production.
“We are looking for students who can sing, dance, act,” Renard said. “Prior experience is a plus, but not necessary.” All attendees will have to fill out an application and submit an audition video.
