When Nita Mohr read a Tribune article about the Ellinwood Quilting Club making 50 “Little Dresses for Africa,” she was inspired. Nita and twin sister, Rita Roblyer, regular members of Great Bend Central Baptist Church, Friday Arts and Crafts group, decided that their group could make 200 dresses. Other church members and friends enthusiastically joined the effort to bring hope to girls, “changing lives one little dress at a time.” They started transforming gently used pillowcases into simple sundresses. After exhausting their pillowcase supply, the ladies continued making dresses with donated fabric and trims.
This week 132 dresses were boxed and sent for missionaries to distribute in 24 countries in Africa. So far, 19 women have worked on this project on Fridays and three special Saturday sewing days. After they finish their goal of 200 “Little Dresses for Africa”, Central Baptist women plan to make “Britches for Boys”, a boy’s shorts project.
Anyone desiring to participate with either sewing project, or donate lightweight fabric or sewing supplies, is invited to join the fun starting at 11 a.m. in the church fellowship hall on Fridays, or call 791-7001 to find out the next Saturday sewing day.
