The Kansas Church Women United Leader’s Council will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 14, at the Heartland Center for Spirituality, 17th and Polk, Great Bend. The event will feature keynote speaker Djamillah Samad, executive director, National Church Women United Headquarters, New York City.
Workshops include “Bullying and Prevention” led by Yolanda Roberts, Wichita; “A Home for the Homeless” led by Melissa Brown Parsons, director of the 24/7 Safe Haven Outreach Mission; and “Kansas Farm Issues” led by Chris Wilson, Manhattan, and speaker, Evelyn Salay, Flint Hills Job Corps Center.
Leadership training for all CWU officers, those who hold a local, area or state office in their church and those that are officers in community organizations will be offered at 8:30 a.m.
Roberts, born of Egyptian parents and a victim of bullying from preschool through high school, will present an extension of her workshop “Bullying and Prevention” at 1 p.m. This program is open to the community; parents and children are encouraged to attend the PowerPoint presentation and mentoring offered by this brave and outstanding young woman, said Church Women United representative Cheryl Pickering.
Bullying is a serious issue in our society today, Pickering said. CWU is committed to providing awareness and education to empower families to advocate for abolishment of bullying in our schools and in the community. Copies of the 2007-2008 Legislation on Anti Bullying, “Bullying and Prevention” will be available at this session. There is no charge for this extended workshop.
The cost of the conference, which includes lunch, is $15 for adults and $3 for children. Participants should indicate, when registering children, if they will be using complimentary childcare.
