With the Nov. 8 general election just over a month away, Barton County Election Officer Bev Schmeidler wants to remind county residents of pending registration deadlines.

The deadline to register to vote is at the end of the business day at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18. The registration books will then remain closed until Nov. 9, one day after the election.

And, although the cutoff is Tuesday, Oct. 27, she said those who want ballots mailed to them should apply sooner rather than later.

Ballot applications are available on the Barton County website, bartoncounty.org. Go to the “Departments” tab and click on “Elections.”

Anyone who is 18 years old on or before the election and meets the citizenship requirement can register. Since this is a general election, one does not have to declare a party affiliation.

There are registration locations scattered throughout the county.

Advance voting

Schmeidler said they also hope to start in-office advance voting on Wednesday, Oct. 19, at her office in Room 202 of the Barton County Courthouse, 1400 Main in Great Bend. Advance voting will be available through noon, Monday, Nov. 7.

Advance voting by mail is available by application through the Barton County Clerk’s Office. Advance ballots may start being mailed out Wednesday, Oct. 19. Ballots must  be returned to the office by 7 p.m. on election day or, if returning by mail, the ballot must be postmarked no later than election day, Nov. 8. Ballots may be returned to a voter’s polling location on election day by the 7 p.m. closing.

In addition, Schmeidler said any voter can go to Voterview at myvoteinfo.voteks.org/VoterView/Home.do or from the Barton County website at bartoncounty.org/Departments/Elections/Current Elections. A person can enter their name (typed exactly like it appears on their voter registration) and date of birth, and can learn if their registered and where they vote, and can see a sample of their ballot (what city and county candidates appear on the ballot can depend on what ward or district in which the voter lives).
