Fatal accident reported in Lyndon County

Two women from Russell died in a two-vehicle accident Friday afternoon in Osage County, the Kansas Highway Patrol reports. A third Russell woman was hospitalized.

Richard D. Basinger, 78, of Lyndon, was driving a van north on U.S. 75, six miles south of Lyndon, at 12:30 p.m., when for unknown reason he crossed the center line in the curve and struck an approaching car head-on. Basinger sustained undetermined injuries in the accident.

The car was a Buick Lesabre driven by Joyce L. Miller, 66, of Russell. She was taken to Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka where she later died. Passenger Carol A. Miller, 70, of Russell, was killed in the accident and taken to the Shawnee County Mortuary. She was the only one involved who was not wearing a seat belt, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol Online Crash Log. Passenger Dolores J. Keenan, 76, another Russell resident in the Buick, was taken to Stormont Vail with undetermined injuries.

 

Burglary reported at 156 Lounge

The 156 Lounge, located at K-156 and NE 120 Road, was reportedly broken into sometime Saturday night. On Sunday morning it was discovered that the back window was completely pulled out with the casing, and that meat, beer and change were stolen.

The case is being investigated by the Barton County Sheriff’s Office.

 

Great Bend Police

Theft of a 1991 Chevy pickup from 1017 Taft St. was reported Friday morning.

A vehicle driven by Justin Brewer was pulling out of a drive at Papa Murphy’s, 3809 10th St., and struck Natasha Harvey, who rode out in front of him on a bike at 1:25 p.m. Friday. This was reported as an injury accident, but Harvey refused treatment.

A vehicle driven by Gerald Steele was westbound on Ninth St. at 5:33 p.m. Friday and rear-ended a vehicle driven by Heather Ney that was stopped at the stop sign.

A vehicle driven by Nathan Werner was westbound on Lakin Ave. at 6:54 p.m. Friday and failed to yield from the stop sign at Kansas Ave.; his vehicle struck a vehicle driven by Tammy Payne that was southbound on Kansas.

A resident at 3400 16th St. reported an armadillo under her porch at 11:18 p.m. Friday.

Theft of a gold, 1997 Pontiac Firebird from 1431 1/2 10th St. was reported Friday night. Loss was $5,000.

A burglary at 1430 Ninth St. was reported over the noon hour on Saturday. Someone broke into the residence and stole money.

A $10 gas skip at 3620 10th St. was reported Saturday.

Police were dispatched to a Washington St. address at 11:10 p.m. Saturday after Elisha Kent Saffa, Great Bend, reported being battered by a known person. That person was contacted and said Saffa had assaulted him with a knife. Saffa was arrested and booked into the Barton County Jail on charges of aggravated assault and a Manhattan Municipal Court warrant. He was released after posting a $20,000 surety bond and $123 cash bond.

A male allegedly stole a can of tea from the Kwik Shop No. 747 at 2334 Main St. late Saturday.

Theft of items from the yard at 2907 16th St. was reported Sunday.

An individual who forgot his cell phone at Pizza Hut went back later and it was gone. Loss was $400 and a theft case was taken.

Theft of a fire pit from the yard at 2408 Williams St. was reported Sunday afternoon.

Theft of three patio chairs from the yard at 2206 25th St. was reported Sunday. Loss was $30.

Theft of a bike from the yard at 2510 Forest Ave. was reported Sunday.

Someone reportedly stole and used a Great Bend resident’s cell phone.

A $30 gas skip at 1906 Main St. was reported at 8:53 p.m. Sunday.

A vehicle struck a utility pole at 227 Heizer St. at 9:27 p.m. Sunday and drove off.

A $44 gas skip at 2337 Washington St. was reported at 9:55 p.m. Sunday.

 

Great Bend Fire Department

Firefighters made five ambulance runs Friday, four Saturday and five Sunday.

There were no fires.

 

Claflin Fire Department

Firefighters responded to a controlled burn at K-4 and NE 40 Ave. at 5:37 p.m. Friday.

A 1998 Chevy S-10 pickup caught on fire while parked at NE 60 Road and NE 110 Ave. late Saturday morning.
