Dust storm causes fatal crash on I-70
KHP patch

Six vehicles were involved in a series of collisions Tuesday afternoon on Interstate-70 in Thomas County, after a dust storm caused little to zero visibility. One driver, Gary L. Stoll, 75, of Oakley, died in the crash. Other drivers had injuries ranging from minor to serious, while some had no apparent injuries.

Kansas Highway Patrol reports the pileup occurred at 1:15 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of I-70, 3.8 miles west of the U.S. 83 intersection.

A 2025 Volvo power unit pulling a trailer entered a blowing dust storm crossing the Interstate from south to north and slowed down due to low visibility. A Toyota Highlander driven by Craig I. Goodman, 70, hit the rear of the trailer. Goodman and his passenger, both from Ness City, were not injured but a chain reaction occurred with more collisions.

A passenger in an Acura MCX, Catherine W. Stout, 63, from Wichita, was transported to Wesley Medical Center with suspected serious injuries.
