HAYS — Great Bend's regional champion Trenton Kern (215) led six Panthers into next week's 5A state wrestling tournament in Saturday's Hays regional.

No. 3 ranked Kern (15-1) pinned Hays High's No. 4 ranked Jaxson Chartier (3:39) in the championship. Salina Central's 2-time state champion and No. 1 ranked Cooper Reves (215) missed the regional for an undisclosed reason.

"Trent was ranked third entering regionals," said Great Bend coach Rex Kern.

Goddard's No. 1 ranked Kolton McElwain defeated Great Bend's No. 2 ranked Tomlinson (157), 15-0 for the third time.

"Triston is opposite bracket from McElwain, so he's a shot to see him in the state finals.

Other qualifiers are fourth-place Cal Schartz (138), fourth-place Trevin Maciel (144), sixth-place Josue Bustamante (285) and eighth-place Brady Mendez (190) qualified for 5A state. Charlie Foster (106) and Abel Spencer (120) missed qualifying by one victory.

"The guys we figured would qualify, did exactly what we expected," Kern said. "Trevin Maciel wrestled the best he has in his life. Trevin beat the No. 2 seed and put everything together at the regional. Brady Mendez also got through. We almost got one more squeezed through to state."

No. 4 ranked Schartz forfeited his third-place match; Newton's Trevor Beyer defeated Maciel, 11-9; Andover's Gunner Davis pinned Bustamante (1:23) and Goddard's Micah Mayer pinned Mendez (2:58).

Bustamante upset Valley Center's No. 6 ranked Beau Young 10-6 to qualify for state.

In past state meets, Tomlinson has finished third and sixth; Schartz placed fourth, Kern has placed fifth, fifth and sixth and Josue Bustamante has qualified.

Great Bend (1001/2) placed 10th with Newton (178) capturing the team title ahead of No. 1 ranked Goddard (1721/2).
