A pilot died Tuesday when a fixed-wing, single-engine airplane crashed at 9:15 a.m. in Ellis County. Kansas Highway Patrol reports John F. Werth, 70, of Hays, was the only passenger in the 1985 Schweizer aircraft, which went down at 240th Road and Smoky Hill Road.
