A head-on collision of two vehicles Tuesday morning in Stafford County resulted in serious injuries. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at 9:40 a.m. on U.S. 50, 3 miles south and 2 miles east of St. John.
A 2016 GMC Sierra driven by James Lee Estes, 47, of Castle Rock, Colorado, was westbound and went left of center, hitting an eastbound 2011 Dodge Charger driven by Juan Carlos Gonzalez-Saldana, 36, of Dodge City head-on.
Estes was transported to the Stafford Hospital with what was believed to be a minor injury. He was wearing a seat belt.
Five occupants in the Dodge Charger, all from Dodge City, sustained what were believed to be serious injuries. The driver was transported to Via Christi Hospital in Wichita; Lucia Velez, 41, and Esmerelda Gonzalez, 15, were taken to Pratt Regional Hospital; and Ezequiel Gonzalez, 5, and Christal Gonzalez, 12, were taken to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
The KHP did not know whether Juan Gonzalez-Saldana was wearing a seat belt. Lucia Velez was wearing a seat belt but the youths were not.
