KBI investigating death at Barton County Jail

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating following the death of an inmate at the Barton County Jail Sunday morning.

According to Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir, shortly after 11 a.m. Sunday, detention officers in the Barton County Jail discovered an unresponsive inmate in his cell. The Great Bend Fire Department EMS was called, and it was determined the subject was deceased. 

At that time, the Barton County Coroner’s Office as well as the KBI were notified.

Per state statutes and BCSO policy, the case has been turned over the KBI for investigation. Any further statements or comments will be made by the KBI. 

No further information regarding the inmate’s identity or cause of death is available at this time.
