Motorcycle and bus collide in Lane County

A Hays man was injured Sunday when the motorcycle he was driving collided with a school bus in Lane County, 9.1 miles east of Dighton, the Kansas Highway Patrol reports.

The crash occurred at 8:28 p.m. on K-96. Paul Dean Simpson, 58, of Hays was driving a 2004 Kawasaki motorcycle and was westbound on K-96 attempting to pass the bus on the left at the same the bus driver was attempting to turn left. The motorcycle struck the 1988 Blue Bird bus, driven by Mark Duane Hager, 48, of Ness City, on the driver’s side steering axel.


Simpson was taken to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita with a suspected serious injury. He had been wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The bus driver, along with four teenage passengers and one 26-year-old passenger, all from Dighton, had no apparent injuries. Only the driver was wearing a seat belt.
