Motorcyclist injured in two-vehicle crash Sunday

A Great Bend man was hospitalized Sunday afternoon after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a vehicle at a major Great Bend intersection.

According to a report from the Great Bend Police Department, at shortly after 12:30 Sunday afternoon, officers were dispatched to a report of an injury crash at the intersection of 10th and Main.

Investigation by officers at the scene indicates that a 2005 Honda motorcycle operated by Gary E. Thorp, 73 of Great Bend, was westbound on 10th Street when it was struck by a 2021 Buick that was attempting to turn northbound onto Main Street from eastbound 10th Street. The GBPD reported Thorp was transported to University of Kansas Health System - Great Bend Campus with what were believed to be serious injuries. According to Chief Steve Haulmark, the driver of the Buick did not sustain injuries requiring immediate medical attention. It is unknown if Thorp was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Both vehicles sustained significant damage.

GBPD was assisted at the scene by Great Bend Fire and EMS, as well as the Kansas Highway Patrol. The accident remains under investigation at this time.
