Ambulance meets parents rushing toward Great Bend

A Rush County couple rushed toward Great Bend with their 5-month-old baby on Sunday, after the infant was accidentally dropped. A Rush County dispatcher contacted Barton County’s dispatch center at 10:07 a.m., saying a deputy was giving them an escort as they headed toward Albert on K-96, driving "right at 100 mph" to a Great Bend hospital.

They were advised to pull over to the side of the road and let Emergency Medical Service take over. Great Bend Fire Department Ambulance, the Barton County Sheriff’s Office and Kansas Highway Patrol responded.

 

Three Russell residents injured in accident

HAYS — Three people from Russell were taken to Hays Medical Center Saturday afternoon after a driver ran a red light and struck the vehicle they were in, the Kansas Highway Patrol reports.

The accident occurred a little after 2 p.m. on U.S. 183, just north of Hays. Gina Renee Sigman, 40, of Russell, had stopped at the stop light at the bottom of the off ramp, waiting to make a left-hand turn onto the highway. When the light turned green and she started to turn, her Chevy Corsica was struck by a Monte Carlo driven by Leroy C. Culbreath, 64, of Hays, who ran the red light. Culbreath was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.

Sigman and passengers Nila J. Wharton, 41, and Kassandra D. Brooks, 21, were taken to the hospital. A 16-year-old passenger in the car was not injured. Sigman and Wharton were not wearing seat belts; the other two were.

 

Man dies in Ness Co. collision

Wilbur A. Wasinger of Ness City died Saturday after his truck collided with another truck, Saturday afternoon in Ness County. The other driver, Tanner Lee Rider, also from Ness City, was injured and taken to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Rider, 26, was westbound on 60th Road at 1:10 p.m. when his truck went across the center line and struck Wassinger’s motorcycle head-on. Wassinger, 70, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Rider was not wearing a seat belt.

 

Crime Stoppers

Sometime between 6 p.m. on Oct. 8 and 10 a.m. on Oct. 9, a storage trailer at 326 C. Street in Great Bend was burglarized. Police Chief Dean Akings reports the padlock was pried off, and a snap ring set, impact socket set, oil, antifreeze and starter fluid were stolen. Loss totaled $632.

Fish fryer starts fire

An unattended fish fryer outside 1110 Roxanne St. started a fire when the grease overheated, Great Bend Fire Chief Mike Napolitano reported. Neighbors saw the flames in the backyard and called 911 at 5:53 p.m. Sunday.

The resident said he was getting ready to fry fish when the grease overheated and ignited. A plywood board, string trimmer and other items caught on fire, and the paint burned off part of the steel siding on the house before the homeowner extinguished the flames with a garden hose. Damage was estimated at $2,000.

Firefighters also made nine ambulance runs on Friday, six on Saturday and two on Sunday.

 

Barton County Sheriff

A vehicle hit a deer on SE 20 Road and SE 40 Ave. at 7 a.m. Friday.

A battery that allegedly occurred Oct. 9 at a residence east of Ellinwood on U.S. 56 was reported Friday. The male victim reportedly sustained a broken jaw.

A three-wheeler that was left under the Arkansas River bridge at Second and Main in Great Bend after it broke down was reportedly stolen around 1 p.m. Saturday. The person who found the ATV contacted the BCSO Sunday afternoon, saying he saw it in the river bottom and loaded it up because he was afraid of it getting stolen. It was returned to the owner.

A gray horse seen in the 3800 block of Railroad Ave. around 2:30 p.m. Saturday was caught and taken to a stable.

One hundred gallons of gasoline were reportedly stolen from 673 North U.S. 281 sometime Friday or Saturday.

A car hit a deer at 8 p.m. Saturday on SE 100 Ave. and SE 30 Road, south of Ellinwood. Kansas Highway Patrol responded.

A goat was stuck between a wall and a fence at Barton Ave. and Gould St., around 12:08 a.m. Sunday. It was freed and was OK.
