Officers find meth, mushrooms, explosives and more

The Great Bend Police Department reports finding suspected methamphetamine, mushrooms, a firearm, brass knuckles and a large sum of U.S. currency during a traffic stop on Friday, July 17. That led to a search warrant for a residence where illegal explosives were found.

Police Chief Steve Haumark stated in a news release that the GBPD conducted a traffic stop on a black Ford F-150 around 5:56 p.m. in the 100 block of 10th Street. The driver of the vehicle, Roosevelt Tyree Henderson IV, age 38, was found to have a no-bond probation violation warrant for his arrest through Barton County District Court.

Barton County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the traffic stop to assist, at which time BTSO K-9 Menta was deployed and alerted to the presence of illegal narcotics.

A search of the pickup yielded 21 grams of methamphetamine, five grams of mushrooms, and the other items mentioned above. GBPD investigators and officers secured a search warrant for a residence located in the 1000 block of Frey Street. During a thorough search of the residence, illegal explosives were located inside. Members of the Wichita Bomb Squad responded to process and collect the explosive devices.

Henderson was arrested and transported to the Barton County Detention Center on charges of distribution of controlled substance, possession of methamphetamine, criminal possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of a hallucinogenic drug, possession of drug paraphernalia, no drug tax stamp, criminal possession of explosives and probation violation.

According to the Kansas Department of Corrections, Henderson, sometimes known as “Baby Boy,” was sentenced in October 2024 for distribution/possession with intent to distribute, a drug-grid severity level 1 offense, which occurred on Sept. 30, 2019. He is under the supervision of Central Kansas Community Corrections. Sentences for earlier convictions in Ellis, Russell and Barton County expired in 2016.
