Great Bend Fire Department

Firefighters made five ambulance runs Monday and four Tuesday.

At 7:37 p.m. Tuesday there was a hay bale on fire in the middle of the road, in the 300 block of SE 20 Road. (See story on this page.)

At 10:10 p.m. Tuesday firefighters responded to 323 Marla St. for a smoke scare. They arrived at the four-plex to find one of the occupants was cleaning a stove.

Barton County Sheriff

Someone damaged a power cord and stole scrap copper from NE 20 Ave. and NE 40 Road, it was reported Tuesday.

A car driven by Brianda Olivas, 19, was southbound in the 200 block of NE 10 Ave. at 4:47 p.m. Tuesday when the driver lost control and it started swerving, entered the west ditch and rolled onto its side, hitting an electric pole with the top of the car. This caused the car to roll back onto its wheels. Olivas received minor cuts and bruising but refused treatment from the Great Bend Ambulance. Sheriff Greg Armstrong said what was originally considered an injury accident was downgraded to a non-injury accident.

Kansas Highway Patrol

Two people were injured Tuesday when a semi-tractor rear-ended a car in Pawnee County. The Volvo semi power unit driven by Milutin Tadic, 38, of Del Plaines, Ill., was eastbound on U.S. 56 behind the 2010 Chrysler sedan driven by Victoria R. Hahn, 27, of Garden City, at 12:25 p.m. As Hahn was slowing and starting to make a left turn onto 140th Ave., the rig struck the car, which spun out of control and landed in the north ditch.

Hahn and her passenger, Mary C. Keith, 40, of Dodge City, were taken to Pawnee Valley Community Hospital in Larned by Emergency Medical Service. Tadic was not injured. Everyone was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.
