Train hits tractor in Ford County

SPEARVILLE — A Spearville man died Tuesday after he drove a John Deere tractor into the path of an oncoming train at the Garnett Road railroad crossing, approximately three miles southwest of Spearville in Ford County.

Kansas Highway Patrol reports Bernard V. Stegman, 59, was taken to Western Plains Medical Center in Dodge City but died as a result of his injuries in the crash, which occurred at 5:06 p.m.

The BNSF train’s engineer, Jase B. Wedel, 44, of Wichita, and conductor, Chad A. Roush, 34, of Stafford, had no apparent injuries.
