When a 67 year-old woman experienced discomfort in her eye, she didnt think much of it. Later she would tell surgeons that she thought it was from old age and dry eye, according to Optometry Today.
To both her and the surgeon's surprise, there was a different explanation for the irritation. In a study published in the British Medical Journal, doctors started cataract surgery on their patient, but found, to their shock, 27 contact lenses that had been lost in her eye.
None of us have ever seen this before, specialist trainee ophthalmologist Rupal Morjaria told Optometry Today. We were really surprised that the patient didnt notice it because it would cause quite a lot of irritation while it was sitting there.
How did this happen?

But, according to Optometry Today, the patient wore monthly contacts for the past 35 years. During that time, she did not have regular optometrist appointments.
In this day and age, when it is so easy to purchase contact lenses online, people become lax about having regular check ups, Morjaria told Optometry Today. Contact lenses are used all the time, but if they are not appropriately monitored we see people with serious eye infections that can cause them to lose their sight.
