THE ALPS An intense video from an attempted rescue shows what happened when a helicopter arrived to pick up some hikers, and things took a turn for the worse.
According to the Telegraph, two mountaineers at the top of Grossglockner mountain in the Austrian Alps called for a helicopter rescue last week after one of them began suffering from heart trouble. The video shows the helicopter arrive and pick up one of the men, and all seems to be going well.
Within seconds though, disaster strikes. The pilot seems to lose control of the aircraft and it starts spinning just feet away from the man still left on the mountain. The chopper then crashes into rocks, sending debris flying everywhere.
The video, captured by a hiker on a nearby peak, is certainly shocking, but to the pilot's credit, he's able to avoid a much more treacherous fate of the helicopter falling down the cliff. Fortunately, the chopper didn't take a tumble. The rescue crew and the hikers survived the crash, with only one person suffering minor injuries.
