No matter your hair type, you always believe the grass is greener on the other side. If you have thin, fine hair, you dream of thick curly locks, and if you have thick, coarse curls, you just wish your hair could be straight and shiny.
Ive always had thick, coarse hair, and when I was about nine, it started getting outrageously curly. I had no idea what to do with it. Years later, I'm still a bit puzzled sometimes.
I watch all those lazy girl hacks tutorials on YouTube and laugh at how easy they make up do's look. There's no way could I pull off a look like that with hair like mine.
As I grew up, I started spending more money than I should have on products, treatments and tools promising to make my hair like a celebritys.
Sometimes, the money seemed worth it (that Brazilian blowout was a dream!) but everything wore off eventually. And in no way did I have time for the three hours it took to straighten my hair every other day.
Eventually I had to come to terms with the fact that my hair is always going to be thick and curly. Instead of working so hard to try to change my hair, I had to learn how to nourish it.
The same can be said for every hair type. You know your hair has its very own personality, so youre going to want to get on its good side. Here are a few things I learned about every hair type during my quest for healthy hair:
For curly hair:
1. Coconut oil
Be sure to use this oil instead of heavier oils like argan oil. It will help keep your curls light and bouncy while still fighting frizz. Other oils fight frizz, but are too heavy. No one wants an oil that weigh downs on your hair and kills your curls.
2. Extra virgin olive oil
This oil surrounds hair follicles and prevents moisture from escaping. It also helps to soften hair, making your curls lighter and bouncier.
3. Avocado
Avocado butter (or even mashed avocado) brings in great moisture for dry hair. It provides a great deep conditioning treatment, and if you crush the seed down to a powder, it can be used to fight dandruff!
For coarse hair:
1. Bentonite clay
This stuff is heaven. Some call it the clay of a thousand uses, and its especially great to soften up your hair. It can be found in natural shampoos, and is used to clean dirt and product buildup from your hair without stripping away your hairs natural oils. It might feel weird washing your hair with what feels like mud, but trust me, it works!
2. Aloe vera
Aloe vera gives your hair moisture all day its also a natural alternative to hair spray. Keep your hair light and moisturized while still getting a gentle hold to your style with aloe vera.
3. Honey
Honey seals in moisture, keeping your hair rich and conditioned. It also helps strengthen hair follicles and fights hair loss.
For fine hair:
1. Babassu oil
For fine hair, coconut oil can sometimes leave a greasy feel. Instead, try babassu oil. It helps strengthen and give life to limp hair.
2. Eggs
Eggs help make hair follicles stronger and thicker. They also add texture to hair, giving it more life and making it easier for you to get your hair to do what you want it to do.
3. Bananas
Use bananas to moisturize your hair. Ive heard that banana baby food is the best way to go, as sometimes plain bananas can be difficult to wash out. Either way, bananas provide a lot of potassium that we sometimes dont get enough of (not enough potassium can actually result in hair loss).
For thin hair:
1. Eggs
Like they help with fine hair, eggs are great for thin hair. The proteins will help strengthen your strands and help your hair follicles be stronger and thicker.
2. Oranges
Cut up an orange and stick it in the food processor, peel and all. Once its down to a nice puree, rinse it through your hair for thickness. You can use this as a shampoo if you'd like.
3. Coconut oil
Ahh, the magic of coconuts. I tend to run coconut oil throughout my hair to soften my coarse follicles, but you can also rub the oil into your roots if you want thicker hair. After rubbing the oil in your hair, cover your hair with a hot towel. This will help the oils to penetrate your hair shafts and strengthen your hair from the inside out.
Look for DIY hair treatments with these ingredients to help your hair type, or look for natural shampoos that incorporate the same or similar ingredients. By embracing the hair you have and loving it, you'll be able to find the best way to handle your hair.
Regardless your hair type, youre beautiful. The most important thing to remember is to own whatever hairstyle youve got going on. I know I just wouldnt be me without my outrageous curls.
