A 16-year-old golden retriever recently received a heros salute as she walked into a Texas veterinarian's office for the last time.
On June 6, Jennifer Bauer from KPRC2 news uploaded a video on her Facebook page of this event. The dogs name was Bretagne (pronounced Brittany), and she was the last known living 9/11 search and rescue dog.
About two dozen firefighters and members of the search and rescue dog community lined the sidewalk to the veterinarian's office to honor and bid a tearful goodbye to the ailing dog as she walked by them for the last time. An American flag was draped over Bretagne's body as she was carried back out of the hospital, according to the Houston Chronicle.
After retiring at age 10, Bretagne spent the remainder of her years volunteering at an elementary school and training other dogs, according to the Houston Chronicle.
Bretagne would have turned 17 in August.
