Popular musician Colton Dixon tied the knot with his partner Annie Coggeshall earlier this month.
And it was a very meaningful moment for the couple, but not just because they finally got married.
In an interview with People magazine, Dixon, who placed seventh in the 11th season of American Idol, said he and his new partner waited until they were married to have sex for the first time so they could make the wedding night more meaningful.
"We wanted to remain pure in that area," the star said. "There were lots of moments [on our wedding night] of 'Oh, you're not going back to your [own] room. That means we're married!' It made it really special for us."
This wasnt necessarily easy for him, either.
"It was not easy!" he told People. "But I believe sex was designed for marriage and I knew it would be more meaningful to wait. That was something I grew up thinking and feeling, and I believe the Bible backs it up as well."
Dixon isnt the only celebrity to wait until marriage to have sex with his or her significant other. NFL star quarterback Russell Wilson and his wife Ciara decided to wait until marriage to have sex for the first time, too, which I wrote about when that news broke back in July 2015.
Wilson said he heard messages from God to hold off on having sex before marriage, hoping that it would relieve any pressure that sex might bring to their relationship.
It was about 15 minutes before she went onstage, Wilson told Pastor Miles McPherson in an interview, as I reported, and she was sitting there, and God spoke to me. He said, I need you to lead her. And I was like, Really? Right now? He goes, No, I want you and need you to lead her. And so I told her, right then and there, What would you do if we took all that extra stuff off the table? Just do it Jesuss way.
But while this worked for Wilson, it didnt have the same result for former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow. Back in November, Tebows then-girlfriend Olivia Culpo, a former winner of Ms. Universe, broke up with the former Florida Gator because of his virginity vow, US Weekly reported.
She had to break up with him because she just couldn't handle it. He still hits her up, but she just can't deal with the sex thing. He's pretty adamant about it, I guess, an insider told US Weekly.
Weve seen this scenario played out before among a number of celebrities. But its not always for religious reasons or due to cultural trends. ABC News reported that some celebrities pledge to stay celibate before marriage so that they can appeal to a younger demographic, specifically becoming role models for children.
[Stars who pledge their virginity] help win over parents who see their kids getting bombarded with sexual imagery and lyrics," senior writer for US weekly Joey Bartolomeo told ABC News. "Virginity certainly helps them get a bigger following."
