The United States younger generations have a leg up on their older family members in two ways, according to new research published by Pew Research Centers Fact Tank.

First, Pew reported that todays public school students are more diverse than ever before. In fact, 2014 was the first year that the majority of students in schools were from minority groups. The chart below breaks down K-12 students by minority, suggesting that public school students will continue to be more diverse in the coming years.

Today's young adults are also better educated than their grandparents and parents, Pew reported.

While they may lag their peers in other nations, American students are outperforming one group: their grandparents, Pew reported. In fact, millennials are on track to be the most educated generation in history compared with older generations when they were the same age.

Pew reported that 21 percent of men and 27 percent of women completed a bachelors degree between the ages of 18 and 33, where as 12 percent of men and 7 percent of women in the Silent Generation many of whom are the grandparents of today's young adults did the same.

Millennials also appear to be ahead of their parents in educational attainment, too, according to the chart below.

Pew reported millennials have more education because minority groups and women have had more opportunities in education. This trend is likely to continue, Pew reported.
