ELLINWOOD — Ada Emilie Theresia Koop, 93, died Feb. 6, 2012 at Great Bend Regional Hospital.
She was born March 4, 1918 at Ellinwood, the daughter of Charles F. Hammer and Erna Gebauer Hammer. She married F. William Koop in Ellinwood June 2, 1990. He died July 7, 2011.
She was a lifetime resident of Ellinwood. She graduated from Ellinwood High School, Sterling College and Fort Hays State University. She began teaching in 1937 at Rural District 3 School in grades 1-8. She spent 18 years teaching in Great Bend at Washington and Eisenhower schools. She spent 18 years in Ellinwood as a classroom teacher and reading specialist, retiring in 1985.
She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Ellinwood, taught Sunday School and played the organ for 40 years. Other memberships included the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, the Ellinwood Historical Society, Heritage Club and Grove Park Golf Club. She was a lifetime member of Phi Delta Kappa, NEA, Kansas Retired Teachers Association, Barton County Retired Teachers Association and Fort Hays State University Alumni Association.
Survivors include nephews, Larry Hammer and wife Connie, San Antonio, Texas; nephew-in-law, Helen Hammer, Loveland, Colo; and Denis Hammer and wife, Lois, Ellinwood; nieces, Patricia and husband Doug McKibben, North Muskegon, Mich.; Erna M. Hammer, Cleveland, Ohio; five grand-nephews, one grand-niece and eight great-nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a sister, Emma Hammer; a brother, Carl Hammer; and a nephew, Robert Hammer.
A Funeral Service is scheduled at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Ellinwood with Rev. Jeff Frakes officiating. Visitation is scheduled from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Kimple Funeral Home. Burial will take place at Lakin-Comanche District Cemetery, Ellinwood.
Memorials are suggested to the Ellinwood Historical Society or the Ellinwood Heritage Club.
