Alfred Louis Pohlman, 93, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Jan. 4, 2021. On June 27, 1927, he was born on a dairy farm to Selma and Clarence Pohlman. He was the third of nine siblings.
In March of 1953, he joined the Army. Upon returning from Korea, he was united in marriage to Iris Buckbee in January of 1957. She passed away February 18, 2017.
He was a lifetime farmer and rancher.
Alfred was involved in numerous church and community projects, including the following: Ellinwood Mayor, city council member, Immanuel United Church of Christ council member and church council president. He was also an EMT and volunteer firefighter for the Ellinwood Fire Department.
He was presented the Distinguished Citizen of the Year Award by the Rotary Club in 1982 and the Dedicated Humanitarian Services Award by the Lion’s Club International Foundation in 2020, where he was a member for 53 years.
Alfred is survived by Vickie (David) Tucker of Overland Park, Janie (late Gary) Davis of Overland Park, Alan (Casey) Pohlman of Ellinwood, Mark (Shannon) Pohlman of Ellinwood and Sonya (Greg)Lamatsch of Claflin. Alfred had 16 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. He is survived by 3 sisters and 1 brother: Betty Thomas, Marlene Wornkey,Jeanette Hallman, and Darryl Pohlman. Alfred was preceded in death by Don Pohlman, Velda Stokes, Dorothy Bryant, and Marilyn Martens.
Public visitation will be at Immanuel United Church of Christ from 11 AM-7 PM on Thurs., Jan. 7th with family present from 5-7 PM. Due to health concerns, a family burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Fri., Jan. 8th at Lakin Comanche Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Immanuel United Church of Christ in care of Minnis Chapel, PO Box 246, Ellinwood, KS 67526.
