Alice J. McDonald, 91, died May 6 at Presbyterian Manor, Emporia. She was born May 1, 1921 at Heizer, the daughter of George V. and Winnie (Whaley) LeRoy.
Alice married Robert W. McDonald Aug. 13, 1939, at Great Bend.  He died May 24, 2009.
During World War II, while Robert served in the U.S. Army at Coffeyville Army Airfield, Alice held a civil service position on base.
She was later employed by USD 428 as an administrative secretary at Great Bend High School from 1968 until her retirement in 1986.
Mrs. McDonald was a lifetime resident of Great Bend, living in Emporia since 2010.
Alice was a member of the Central Baptist Church, Golden Sheaf Chapter of O.E.S., Cosmopolitan Study Club, Lake Barton Lady’s Golf Association, Community Concert Association, United Church Women, Girl Scouts, and many other community and church activities in the Great Bend area.  She was also a member of the Kansas Secretaries Association.
She is survived by one daughter, Linda Jean Vander Velde and husband Jay, Emporia; five granddaughters; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by daughter, Karen Ruth Atsaides, and sister, Elda Gaulding.
The memorial service will be  1 p.m. on Thursday, May 10, at Central Baptist Church in Great Bend with the  Rev. Dr. Joan Harrington and Rev. John Grummon officiating. There will be a private family interment at Great Bend Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at Bryant Funeral Home.
Memorial are suggested to Central Baptist Church or Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America to benefit the Employee’s Scholarship Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent and notice viewed at www.bryantfh.net.
