HOISINGTON — Bess E. Sellens, 83, died May 2 at Locust Grove Village, LaCrosse.  Born March 30, 1932 at Milo, Mo., she was the daughter of Allen and Mary (Brown) Laflen.
Bess married Howard Sellens Feb. 7, 1953 at Hoisington.  Mrs. Sellens was a Hoisington resident since 1953, coming from Moundville, Mo.  She retired in 1992, after 36 years of teaching in area country schools and Lincoln and Eisenhower Elementary Schools in Hoisington.  She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and A.C.E. teacher’s union, both of Hoisington.
Survivors include her husband, Howard Sellens, of the home; her son Philip Sellens and wife Bonnie of Great Bend; three brothers: John Laflen of Buffalo Center, Iowa, Bob Laflen of Houston, Texas, and Jerry Laflen of Moundville, Mo.; her sister, Penny Beattie of Nevada, Mo.; two grandchildren, Sara and  Kathleen Sellens; three step-grandchildren, Jonathan Stowers, Tonya Stowers, Stephen Stowers; and six great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by sister, Pauline Hines.
Funeral service will be Wednesday, May 6, at 10:30 a.m., at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home.  Interment will be at Milo City Cemetery, Milo, Mo., Thursday, May 7, at 10:30 a.m.  Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday, May 5, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, with family receiving friends from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m.  Memorials are suggested to Clara Barton Hospital Foundation or First United Methodist Church or Kans for Kids, in care of Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Box 146, Hoisington, KS  67544.  Condolences may be sent and notice viewed at www.nicholsonrickefh.net
