ELLINWOOD — Betty June Dewey, 89, died on June 9 at Citizens Medical Center in Colby. Born June 8, 1924 in Radium, she was the daughter of Roy J. Fertig and Ruth Yocum Fertig. Her step-mother was Ella Freida Jost Fertig. She attended Fort Hays State University. On July 21, 1946 she married Devon W. Dewey in Radium. He died on July 31, 1999. An Ellinwood resident for the past two years, formerly of Seward, she was a farm wife, worked at Larry’s Garden Center and taught elementary school in Eudora and Radium.
Mrs. Dewey was a member of the First Baptist Church in Ellinwood.
Survivors include four sons, Kenneth Dewey of Seward, Dennis Dewey of Kansas City, Mo., Marvin Dewey of Sterling and Glenn Dewey of Ellinwood; a daughter, Rita Office of McDonald; two brothers, Raymond J. Fertig of Ellinwood and Stanley R. Fertig of Saegertown, Pa.; three sisters, Lorene Jost of Hillsboro and Irene Jost, both of Hillsboro and Velma Root of Albuquerque, N.M.; 14 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Carl Fertig; a sister, Mary L. Fertig; a son, Larry Dewey; a great-grandson, Joshua Bland; and a daughter-in-law, Becky Dewey.
Committal service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at Eden Valley Cemetery, 1801 NW 20th Ave. in Stafford County near Seward. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at the First Baptist Church south of Ellinwood with the Rev. David Wesner officiating. Friends may visit from 1 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Kimple Funeral Home in Ellinwood. Memorials are suggested to The Wounded Warrior Project or the Devon and Betty Dewey Ministerial Training scholarship.
