GREAT BEND – Carl Marvin Wells, 76, died Dec. 9, 2013 at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan.
He was born Dec. 4, 1937 at Mahaska, Kan., the son of Clarence and Rose (Hauschel) Wells.
He married Phyllis Westhoff Nov. 9, 1957 at Morrowville, Kan. He owned and operated the Standard Station, Washington. He was also the bookkeeper for his wife’s hair salon for 56 years, and later for Doonan’s of Great Bend.
In 1982, at the age of 45, Carl attended Brown Mackie College in Salina, earning his computer and bookkeeping degrees. Mr. Wells was a Great Bend resident since 1984. He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council No. 862, both of Great Bend; and active member of Washington Jaycees.  He was a former member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, Washington, where he also served on the board. He was an avid KSU fan.
Survivors include his wife: Phyllis Wells, of the home; a daughter, Sheri Gilliam and her husband Tim, Washington; three sons, Edward Wells and his wife Jolene, Milliken, Colo.; Robert Wells and his wife Coleen, Topeka; and John Wells and his wife Bettina, Colorado Springs, Colo.; a sister, Doris Clark and husband Bill, Towanda; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lester Wells and Lloyd Wells, and three sisters, Ruth Ginn, Betty Smith, and Marie Heorman.
Vigil Service with Knights of Columbus Rosary is scheduled at 7 p.m., Thursday at Bryant Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled at 10  a.m. Friday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend. Interment will be at the Washington City Cemetery at 4 p.m. Friday with Father David Metz officiating.
Visitation is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Bryant Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to Barton County Relay for Life or Carl Wells Expense Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.
